Divorce: The Reasons and The Work

Right reasons for divorce / where divorce is inevitable

  • Physical abuse
  • Violence of any form
  • Illegal involvement
  • Immorality
  • Cheating
  • Zero participation or contribution in the partner’s life

Wrong reasons (workable reasons) for divorce / where it is possible to work on yourself and the relationship (at least one partner can start)

  • Partner is not romantic
  • Partner does not meet your expectations
  • Partner is egoistic/dominating
  • We are always frustrated
  • There are anger control issues
  • Either partner is depressed
  • We don’t talk anymore
  • There is no spark
  • There is no intimacy
  • I don’t get any attention/appreciation
  • Partner is selfish
  • We have different parenting styles
  • I feel lonely in the relationship

There is big hope if the above are your reasons. In such cases, it is not easy but it is definitely not very difficult to work on yourself and your partner. You may require counselling. Also, conversations with your partner – held with an open mind – often help.

Working On Yourself

  1. Being self aware/ observing yourself and your own patterns
  2. Develop your self-esteem (a person with right self-esteem usually does not see others as a problem)
  3. Work on anger management
  4. Change deeper level conditioning that causes distorted perception and prejudices
  5. Check and clear your heart of resentment, holding on to the past, hatred, jealousy, possessiveness, male chauvinism or radical feminism.
  6. Break your ego, which is the biggest cause of relationship issues
  7. Being emotionally dependent (clinging, attachment, anxiety, fear, insecurities) harms the relationship.
  8. Being overambitious (financially) is another leading cause of relationship issues. Prioritise the relationship, give time for self-improvement, create space for conversations, and spend time on developing ideas to calmly navigate through the issues.
  9. Don’t expect too much from yourself or from the partner. Be human, not superhuman. Try being simple and easy going. Be happy with basics. Develop gratitude.
  10. Avoid being image-conscious, people-conscious, conscious about status in society, or about status in family. When you develop self-esteem, you will get your rightful status naturally.
  11. Give importance to expressing your pure genuine feelings to your partner, without hesitation; however if you have any negative feelings, then expressing them will worsen the issues. Any negative feelings have to be consciously dissolved; or change the negative feelings to love and care because that’s what you have in your heart otherwise you would not be reading this blog.
  12. Remember love is not romance or a spark or passion. Love is genuinely wishing well for the partner. Expecting attention is not love, it’s being selfish. It’s fair to expect that your partner wishes your good (and does no harm). In love, you help each other grow, or maybe just “give the space” to grow. If you feel safe in that space, be content there. Ruminate about what to expect and what not to expect in love.
  13. Keep your “needs” aside. Needs are limitless. You need to eat everyday, you need to drink water day and night. Love and care cannot be an everyday need; if it is then it becomes like a pill you take everyday without which you get sick, or like an addiction. It’s not healthy to expect your partner to show love and care everyday or at specified intervals of time. If love and care is what you “need,” your partner is not a “provider.” We all love to live free, being a provider is a burden, it is like being tied up, bondage. “Free yourself” from your needs and “free your partner” from the bondage of providing.
  14. Be independent. This will build your confidence.
    • Firstly, free yourself of your emotional needs.
    • Secondly, be capable of earning money for your basic needs.
    • Be physically capable to do your own house chores.
    • Use your intelligence (or learn) to independently navigate through everyday challenges and decisions,
    • Learn to cook your own food (it’s not fair to depend on others for your basic need),
    • Learn to manage your social relationships (and loneliness) independently.

Where children are involved:

A toxic household wounds children. And so does a divorce handled with bitterness. If you stay, stay with conscious work. If you leave, leave with dignity and co-parenting.

Remember when you work on yourself and your relationship, it helps you become a better parent:

  • you become calmer, more patient, and more forgiving in your interactions with your child
  • you are seen as a genuinely happy person by your child.
  • your child develops a perspective for the world – a perspective of hope, love, and care.
  • when your child sees you resolving conflicts, he/she learns emotional resilience – an important chapter of life.
